How does the right brain help creativity amongst children at a younger age?
“The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honours the servant and has forgotten the gift”- Albert Einstein
The human body consists of many organs, and the brain is found to be one of the most complex organs. It controls every aspect and process that helps in regulating the body. The left side of the brain is associated with analysis, literacy, time, numeracy, and language. It assists us to be logical, and calculative and also helps us live in a pragmatic world that entails the past, present, and future. On the other hand, the right side of the brain is responsible for intuition, creativity, empathy, and imagination. It encourages us to dream, wonder, and live in the present. While the left brain is mainly interested in the end result or the outcome, the right brain is more thoughtful about the process, i.e., the journey it takes to reach the outcome.
Another crucial aspect to understand is that the right brain helps us connect to our limitless sense of being. Hence, young children who are right-brain dominant are actually content beings. By this, we should realize that play is a crucial part of child learning, and along with emphasizing the product, i.e., what the kids have achieved, we should also emphasize the process. The development of the right brain occurs first, and this information is very vital for those in the educational industry as well as parents, because pushing children to comprehend numeracy and literacy before the age of seven may cause them to lose their desire to learn. The academic pressure placed on children causes them to overlook the wonderful playground of imagination and wonder that comes from the right brain.
“Children are not things to be moulded, but are people to be unfolded.” ~ Jess Lair
One cannot estimate the qualitative characteristics of empathy, intuition, and imagination, but on the other hand, the functions that are linked with the left brain can indeed be measured. While pushing things that can be calculated and estimated onto the children, leads to them feeling like they don’t measure up!
The left brain splits life into several pieces, whereas life is united into one by the right brain. Hence, babies do not distinguish between the environment and themselves; everything is one! The right brain urges us to enjoy the little things in life; to enjoy the surprise and enhancement they offer while also being present with each other. It is a playground of thoughts and imagination, and the children should be encouraged to enhance this aspect with the help of doodling, wonder, and curiosity. It is also seen that healthy right-brained individuals can use their left brain functions in a more positive way.
The most important thing to remember is that life is less related to what is accomplished by us and the tools of the left brain; it is more about being present in the current situation and engaging with your loved ones while also connecting with others with whom you don’t even know as children do!
